Southern Health NHS Foundation Trust - Older persons Mental Health

We support any older person living in Hampshire (normally aged 65 or over) who is experiencing mental health problems. This might be due to:

  • Organic mental illness – this type of illness is usually caused by disease affecting the brain. Dementia such as Alzheimer’s disease is an example of organic illnesses.
  • Functional mental illness - this type of illness has a predominantly psychological cause. It may include conditions such as depression, schizophrenia, mood disorders or anxiety.

Basingstoke Discovery Centre provides a range of resources to support people with dementia, their relatives and carers.

  • Pictures to Share Books – books designed for people with dementia to help and encourage communication and discussion.
  • Reminiscence Collection - includes books, posters, games and quizzes, postcards, printed and recorded music, jigsaws, photographs, smell box and talking tapes. These have been chosen to stimulate and support reminiscence.
